The Panther begins to take form with the wheels mounted to the
under-carriage and a partially complete hull and turret showing
the outline of the vehicle.

|
|
|
At this stage, there is virtually nothing inside of the tank, although
it's motors are mounted and it can be controlled by some long wires
connected to a set of switches. Will decided to use metal treads
connected to bicycle chains using rivets, instead of the wooden/epoxy
treads developed initially for Tiger Tank #001. Both approaches can
be improved in the future by molding plastic treads.

With the hull and turret construction almost complete, the vehicle
starts to look like a tank, with a piece of PVC tubing to show the
approximate size of the gun.

A view of the right side of the tank, with a better view
of the basic design for the gun assembly.

A piece of flexible plastic tubing serves as the prototype
paintball magazine. This approach proved to be unreliable
and was replaced by a flat-tray magazine mounted directly
over the gun.
|
|
|
|
The Panther turret is multi-faceted, which requires a lot
of patience and wood filler when assembling.

Panther Tank #002 shown here after the first R/C Tank Battle
fought on November 10, 2001, during which it scored the first ever
hit in R/C Tank Combat on the way to the first victory. All of the systems
worked well, although some will need further refinement, along with
a couple coats of paint.
