R/C Tank Combat

1st Monkton Crusade

Battle Video

The following video clips were taken by Amir Tahvildaran who didn't get his T-34 completed in time for the battle, but nonetheless had plenty of fun wandering around the battlefield.

Dance of Death (MPG, 1.0Mb)
Steve Tyng's Cromwell dances around with the venerable Tiger 1 as both tanks try to pick up the General who is laying at the intersection of the lines marked on the field. The Cromwell has more speed, but the Tiger can turn fast enough to counter each attack.

Mad Dash (MPG, 2.6Mb)
Steve Tyng and his Cromwell make a high-speed dash into the village to deliver the General to the church, coordinating actions with the Hetzer which is trying to deliver the General's wife. Unfortunately for the Gangsters, just before the Cromwell arrives, the Knights surrounded the Hetzer and destroyed it, immediately releasing the General's Wife. So, as the Cromwell skids into the church, it needs to immediately turn-around and get out of Dodge City before the Knights destroy it as well. NOTE: The video is running at normal speed ... the action was blazingly fast.

Perhaps Too Fast (MPG, 888.3Kb)
The Cromwell moves so quickly at top speed that Steve has to literally run behind it to keep up. Steve was spotted at least a couple times just standing on the battlefield catching his breath!!

Run Away, Run Away (MPG, 3.0Mb)
While the Knights were waiting to collect the General and bring him to the church, the Gangsters mounted an all out assault on the village. Rather than risk losing the General's Wife too close to the village, the Knights executed a "strategic retreat" (that's the official phrase for running away) and kept the Gangsters from gaining the real prize.

Pesky Thing (MPG, 2.4Mb)
Battle veteran Steve Tyng goes after battle rookies Karl/Pete (Karl drives the tank and Pete operates the gun) who are operating the Jagdtiger which is acting as the rear guard for the Knights retreat. (Actually, Karl didn't hear the retreat order and was left to die by his teammates.) Interestingly, despite an abundance of speed and experience, the Jagdtiger survived the attack simply by staying in one place and spinning to face the enemy. When the Cromwell ran out of ammo, Karl retreated to meet the rest of the Knights, who were then mounting a counter-attack on the village.

Fast and Furious (MPG, 2.4Mb)
Amir runs across the field himself to catch some fast and furious action as the Cromwell and Tiger dance in a ditch, while each are supported by friendly fire.

Major Assault (MPG, 2.6Mb)
The Gangsters make another concentrated assault on the village, forcing the Knights back into a defensive position. Despite a quick attack by the Cromwell, the Knights were able to concentrate their own fire and force a stale mate. Bear in mind, the Knights already had a commanding lead at this point, so the Gangsters needed to keep pushing hard.

Speed vs. Tactics (MPG, 3.4Mb)
This clip shows that speed alone doesn't win the battle, with the Cromwell taking on the Tiger and KV-1. With equal speeds, no veteran operator would ever take on two veteran operators in such a defensive position. But, the Cromwell's extra speed encouraged Steve to give it a try. Although the Cromwell was able to zip around with ease, the Tiger and KV-1 were also able to keep their guns trained on the Cromwell most of the time. In fact, the Cromwell was hit enough times that it was destroyed and had to return to home base for re-incarnation.

Flanking Action (MPG, 955.1Kb)
In the first part of the second battle, the Knights were trying to push hard into the enemy zone by driving down the ditch out of range of the fixed artillery in the village.
