Actually, I think the tank uses an adjustable limit switch to regulate tank pressure. You set the tank to 200 PSI and it will build 200 PSI and then cut off. And every time it dips enough to unseat the limit switch, the pump kicks on. The regulator goes on the tank output to control how fast it bleeds down. Maybe both are called regulators.

I want to look into this because I have a gun design in mind.

Too much work and too little sleep lately.

The regulators we use at work, you set them to x psi and that is what it puts out. When it dips below, The pump kicks on, charges the tank back up and turns off.
