Yo, I got something in progress! Pictured is prototype #2 of my robot/tank, lighter
chassis, higher gearing, and more batteries than the original. I spent the week
building a new aluminum and Garolite frame and used all the internal parts from the
original. This is not a competition tank...it's much more diabolical! I found a good
deal on a Sidewinder ESC so I'll be replacing the Vantec with that. The Sidewinder
is much more powerful and smaller, it weighs less than a pound and handles 36V X 80
amps per motor continuously. Another nice feature is adjustable current limiting to
help protect batteries and motors. Of course, a fuse is still needed for more
protection of the motors, batteries, and ESC.
This morning I hooked up the wires and drove the new chassis for the first time. As
of now I've only driven the robot with one 24V pack of 2.6 AH NIMH batteries. The
tank/robot has space for four packs, I just need to put connectors on the other
ones. Even using just one battery pack, it drives pretty fast (a moderate running
speed) and does wicked skid turns. Now I have a lead on four 4.2 AH NIMH sub-C packs
(sub-C is the size used in RC cars).
Build light and devote a lot of weight to batteries/motors = fast tank!

Here it is after the top got put on the hull. That's the only part
that won't be hinged. I have thoughtfully provided a half-liter water
bottle for scale.

This is the dead ahead view. Tell me it doesn't look a LITTLE like
I'm building a 1/6000 scale model of Galactica instead of a 1/6 tank.

After the boat battle this weekend, I start adding the suspension.
Why is the center of the turret ring hollow? Because I wanted to :)
and, the rotating surface will be two rings of very thin Teflon and
this gives me access to the center of the hull. Also, the gun in the
M60 is pretty close to the turret ring, and this lets me get more
elevation. Anybody know how to do calls for fire? Anyone building a
1/6 FO/FAC aircraft? :) [okay, I exaggerate slightly]
