Yeah, I was just reading your exchange with Chris about oil and
gathering dirt. With steel hinges, I'd go with dousing them with oil,
and cleaning the dirt off later. I've seen some nasty rust on steel
hinge pins that got wet. Of course, that was in a saltwater
environment, but I think your tracks will last quite a while the way
you're doing.
Probably longer than my masonite & bicycle chain tracks :) (cost
about US$30) When the masonite gives out, I'll consider doing the
hinge tracks; they'd look very close to the original FT-17 tracks, I
think.
