The balsa is only there to give form to the first layer(s) of
fiberglass. After that, it's just there. The areas where the track
sponsons mount are heavily reinforced, and coincidentally, the
gearboxes mount in those reinforced areas, towards the rear.
If you want to do a glass-on-balsa hull, bring some fiberglass (I got
mine at Napa or Advance Auto), some epoxy resin, and some 1/4" x 6" x
36" balsa to the build session. Or, just show up and see what I did,
and do it at home, it's far from complicated. Most of the time and
effort involved is planning.
