"Fair enough, know what it feels like to be disappointed in electronics and magic smoke."
let me elaborate. i was running a pair of 9.6volt drill motors at around 22volts and keeping the amp draw low by using tiny batteries. I was bench testing with the wheels up, all of the sudden, durring a hard foward to reverse switch the whole unit locked up. The only way to get it workiong again was to remove power. When i powered it up again the flip function had stopped working and it would occasionaly glitch in other ways aswell. I can only assume that it had somehow fried its programming, as there was no physical damage.
Now I was slightly disapointed in the hardware, as I don't beleive it's current ratings when run above 12volts, and under no circumstances should it lock up and fry itself but what really let me down was the way Robot Power choose to handel the situation.
That is really the difference
between a real business and someone who runs an after hours gig in the garage. A real business will step up to the issues of a dissatisfied customer. In this system they only power we have as consumers is to vote with the pocket book. For this reason places like Robot Power and Robot Maket Place will no longer get my buisness. But at the same time I do wish to point out suppliers that do right, and in many cases have gone above the normal call of duty: team delta, team whyachi, machinelab, tower hobby, mcmaster carr, Harbot freight.
As for your experences, I would assume the XL works because you are running mild motors and most of the running time is spent going "full out" in one direction. Like all things the devil is in the details, gearing, driving style, ambient temp, etc.

I have used the scorpion xl on a 12lb robot, and based on my experiences I would not use it on a tank of any size for drive, i can see using it for a turret. Sadly, based on my experiences with both the scorpion Xl and Robot Power I will not use any of their products again.

For a turret, yes its probably best suited to that application rather than for drive.
To be fair to the product, your experience is based on a 12pound robot. Thatıs 5.4 Kg.
My experience is I have been using it on a small 20 kg steel tank without any issues.
Running 100 watt scooter motors with a reduction of 2.7 : 1 giving an rpm of 850 at 24volts.
Motors are rated at 6 amps so it does it really easy, I can push furniture around with it.
