i don't think cost should be an issue as the reduction has to be done. not saying to pay $100.00 for a gear, but this is one area that cost cutting shouldn't be considered too much.
 
how heavy is the tank? does this weight include the paint gun and main batteries?
 
what kind of motors are you using? do you know the RPM, amp/watt draw? do you want it to be a bit on the faster - battery eating side, or on the slower, torque-power giving side?
 
if the tank is complete, what is the dia of the drive sprocket for your tracks?
