From the image that Chris posted, it seems to me that if you decreased the spring rates of the first and last road wheels, the track would be making ground contact on 6 road wheels rather than 8. This would still give the "look" of the monster, but give more of the "box" footprint that Chris is talking about. It is probably possible to have adjustable spring rates on the 2nd and 7th roadwheels, or the 1st and 4th bogey sets, so that the track under these do not press down quite as hard as the middle, 2nd and 3rd, roadwheel sets.

But probably more important is the internal weight distribution. If the heavy items, motors and batteries, are positioned over the middle roadwheel sets, this would decrease the weight on the 1st and 8th roadwheels. It would save you from fiddling with spring rates.
