I went back to the scrap yard today and got a bunch of those 5 1/4"
escalator wheels. It took a lot longer to take them off than I had thought
without having a gearpuller. Anyway I think I should be able to interleave
them without too much hassle. I might have to increase the width of my
tracks a bit, but it shouldn't be too bad. The wheels were attached to the
axles with external snap-rings. I think I'll do the same and have grooves
machined into my axles on the inside and outside to sandwhich the wheels
between two snap-rings. There was also a brass washer behind each snap-ring
and the bearings. Overall I believe these wheels should work quite nicely.
I have attached some pictures of the wheels and my cardboard prototype hull.
Sorry about the somewhat poor camera-phone pics (I was too lazy to go
inside and get my camera!).
