That is in essence how a basic hinge set up works. The nuts/bolts whatever that hold the hinges together also act as guides for the road wheels and also double as the drive mechanism as the drive wheel uses pins running between 2 plates to engage the nuts as well. It works very much like the T-34 drive system. You can use bolts and nuts in the middle hole and rivet the two holes on the side of every hinge.

The system is realistic, brutal , pretty -yet -ugly-as it should be, and the sound is great, however it has one disadvantage, if you want my opinion. Hinge tracks are heavy, however I don't think that they are heavier than a roller chain track, like in Will's T 017 tank. It works and is maintained like a real track (soak them overnight  into a bucket full of oil everynow and then).
