OK, after much um-ing and ah-ing I have finally started on my tank. Despite
the draw of a 1/6th Valentine I have decided to build a Crusader III which
will give me a 30/3 rating. I considered a Crusader II CS but, although it's
3" (76.2mm) howitzer would give me a 40/3 rating, I just couldn't bring
myself to build a tank which in reality had no armour pieicing ability
whatsoever.
And that bulbous cast mantlet looked a right bugger to replicate . . .
So far the hull is taking shape in a mixture of 9 and 12mm MDF sheet. The
flanks are to be double skinned with the suspension sandwiched between the
inner and outer hulls - like the real thing.
Mechanicals and tracks are still up in the air at the moment but I'm working
on the principle that if I don't actually start it while I try to work out
how everything will be done, than I will never start it.
Armament is to be an old pump action 'Scorpion' marker. This has a pump
throw of about 18mm and I'm hoping to use a solenoid to do the pumping. It's
a 'slam fire' design so that as soon as the bolt is closed the gun fires.
With luck I can operate it as an electrically operated, open-bolt design.
Hopefully.
Anyway, back to the garage and a growing pile of saw dust . . .
Pete.
