I'm planning on using go-kart band brakes on the differential shafts.

This band brake has a 1" bore and keyway, so machining should be minimal. I'll use several big servos configured for lots of leverage to pull on the brakes.

No, the first arrangement is just how I set the parts out initially to see how they will fit together. The last three pictures are the most recent. I wanted to include that 1st picture mainly to show the motor and transaxel arrangement. I want to make the drivetrain like that of a real tank, with just one motor driving a differential. There will be a brake on each side of the differential to slow down one track or the other for steering.

 

As I said in my first message, I'm coming from building fighting robots, so a lot of my parts and materials are leftovers from that. Here is a partial list of the parts I'm using for the Mark VIII Liberty:

While all this stuff is very expensive, it is mostly leftover from robots, so I'm not spending an arm and a leg to make this tank.

 

My goals in this project are probably quite different than those of many other tank builders. Rather than combat effectiveness or strict scale reproduction I'm going for speed, strength, and in general making it fun to drive and maintainance-free.
