I HAD to use wood.  Being that they are about 4.5" high, anything else would be too heavy or hard to work with.  I looked forever for pre-made wheels, but found nothing that would suit my needs or pricetag.  Being such an odd size also made the desicion of wood very easy.  They are amazingly light.  I will end up using resin or something just to smooth out the finish on them once the details are added.  I believe they will be plenty strong as is since they are a one piece of solid wood.  The ABS outer will also take the majority of the impacts.

Absolutely wonderful work Derek.  Will you harden the wooden wheels somehow? soak them in some kind of epoxy or resin? have you thought of using material other than wood for the ground wheels? like aluminium or something?
