We recently decided *not* to count barrel hits because (a) they can
happen when two tanks are facing each other and otherwise wouldn't be
able to score and (b) they give tanks with short barrels and/or no flash
suppressor a bigger advantage. (Tanks with stubby barrels already have
numerous advantages, including more stable, better accuracy, and easier
to turn.) Eliminating barrel hits also eliminates some squabbling over
what are otherwise lucky shots.
