Thanks a lot Doug, exactly what I am looking for. Now I know how to proceed. One 
more question to the group: It seems that all of you are using chains and sprockets 
for gearing down. Has anybody tried toothed belts? They are also able to transfer 
lot of torque, but are more silent than chains.

I use this scooter motor (http://tncscooters.com/product.php?sku=106120) for
my HMMWV and I've been very happy with it so far. It's pretty inexpensive
($25 US), but you'll also need a transmission to gear it down. Check out #25
chain and sprockets from www.surpluscenter.com for that.

After a fast check from local wheelchair suppliers it seems not to be
possible to find any surplus motors from them. They only have new stuff
which cost enormously. You told that it might be possible to find these from
the Netherlands. Would you like to give me an address where to ask?
How about the EV-X motors? Where could I find those?
