Both work OK.
You can use thinner wire for #2.
In #1 the current from both battery pairs flows out through one
positive wire attached to the top of the right pair and in
through one negative wire.
In #2, you have two wires to carry the current from the top
positiveterminals, and two wires to carry current into the bottom negative
terminals.
