Yes, if you want fully proportional independent steering you'll need two
PWMs, but the 8-way control provided by the relays is usually sufficient
to operate effectively on the battlefield. Throw in proportional speed
for each of those 8 directions and you've probably got more than enough
control to do anything you want on the battlefield.
Keep in mind, when you're being attacked by overwhelming numbers, the
difference between a fully proportional arc, a partially proportional
arc, and a high-speed spin is academic ... adrenaline overrides fine
motor control :-)
