Why not a lead screw assembly with limit switches at the endpoints?  If the
lead screw is geared correctly the elevation/depression of the gun could be
very scale-like.

PS-- I know absolutely nothing about electronics.  Santa is bringing me the
book "Electronics for Dummies" so maybe I can figure out this stuff myself.
