How about using an automotive seatbelt as a track linking material. An inner and outer track pad, two pieces of 1/4 or 3/16 thick masonite or plywood, can be used to sandwich the belt. Screws or glue, can be used to hold the two together. if the ends are notched, then a wooden sprocket (or smooth-on) can be used. Trying Gorilla glue as a to hold the plywood on for my tracks. Works pretty good so far. Havent done actual "field" test yet though.
Hope this helps
