Not exactly the same....the chains would be on the edges, not the middle with the rungs on the same level as the chain on the outside.  Very similar to the tracks on an M60 tank.  That's where I go the idea.

On another tack-- Has anyone ever used or considered using kevlar timing belts as the basis of the track?

I read your description and I'm getting a picture of the bicycle chain
tracks used on the early tanks in this hobby. Correct me if I'm wrong.
