I just purchased some surplus #50 hollow pin roller chain on Ebay and was going to prototype a new type of track/sprocket system. I was going to use two strands of chain per track in parallel connecting them in the middle with wooden track links and pins/screws. Basically the chain would be the uprights of the ladder with the wood in the middle being the rungs. Then I could use off the shelf #50 sprockets (two per drive shaft) mated together at the proper spacing to drive the track. Being that the sprockets will be keyed on a keyed shaft, the whole thing should be quite strong and securely attached. I think the whole system would be simple to construct with the power tools that I have (router to round the link edges, miter box, and table saw). I got the chain for a song, $2.00/ft and it's nickel plated. Aluminum could also be substituted for the rungs, but I think the weight would begin to pile up with an
all metal track of this type. I would call my invention.....DTSS (Derek's track & sprocket system). :) What do you guys think?
