I'd try some surplus wheel chair motors.  They are huge and come with very durable gearboxes. Get in touch with Garnet in Saskatoon, he is building a "ride-in" tank using salvaged wheelchair motors and gearboxes last I heard.
 
I picked up some for free(minus the salvage and clean-up time) at the local Medi-Chair dealer here in Calgary. Check the wheelchair dealers in your community, you may find  some salvageable n/c motors and gearboxes.

Any ideas on how to equip something this big with a DC motor ?
Ideally the electric motor would be interchangeable with the hopeful gas powerplant.
It would be great to be able to use it at a battle. Even if it is a proverbial barn door.
