They are British Gun Carriers.
They are open topped and were not meant to really be in the thick of
things in combat.
They had a machine gun mounted in the port you see on the front in that
second photo.
The Polish TKS and the TK-3 and the other variants did look like small
tanks.
And were in my opinion far cooler looking.
