Loren,
You are correct about the Stugs being part of
the artillery branch. At the beginning of the war
Guderian petitioned Uncle Adolph for full control over
these units. The assault artillery generals complained
that this was the only way an artillery man could earn
the Knights Cross. So Uncle Adolph,by the way he's not
related, said, leave them be. Excerpt from Panzer Aces
