Yeah, the 9volt was really a temporary measure to get up and running.  In fact 
before I had the right connectors I soldered the wires to the battery to test the 
circuit for the first time, you can see the fine electronics work:

I'll probably hook it up to a spare 12v UPS battery when I get a chance.
