Marty et al,
Since the official official head of
official news has released the first official
description of the 2nd Official Danville Showing the
Colors excursion I can fill you in on some happenings.
The staff at the AAF Museum erected an excellent
indoor site for the Navarone display. I believe that
Steve's Dad took quite a few photos which will be
displayed shortly. We were kept busy the entire
Saturday, either answering questions or assisting with
the Navarone gun or helping with the driving course.
Luckily the hot dog stand was next to us, made for
getting a quick bite real easy.

Sunday was much quieter. I think that was
due to it being Palm Sunday and a very nice day
outdoors. But as Frank mentioned it allowed us some
play time of our own. Driving the obstacle course was
a hoot. Even though my Mark IV is not nitrous injected
like Frank's Tiger (the Tiger is a speed demon) it
came down to smooth driving to avoid the cones. Then
switching to the UN vehicle made the only difference
being the skill of the driver. The results when Frank
posts them is quite interesting.
Firing the Navarone gun was absolutely
outstanding. Only ten rounds, and hit 6 targets and
not hit the penalty target, and do it in the quickest
time. TOO EASY DRILL SARGEANT. TOO EASY. We also
convoyed our vehicles around the museum.
Outside the door was a lovely mound of dirt
that the T-34 just had to climb. Of course then it
meant that the others must do the same. Tiger 1
sprinted to the top of the mound. I attempted the hill
from a different side in the PzKwIV. This side was
much steeper. My tank went 3/4 up before it stalled,
it would slip, then gain ground and slip again. It was
just like the final scene with Hessler in the Battle
of the Bulge attacking the fuel depot. The tracks
would turn and slip but not gain any ground. Unlike
Hessler, I saved my tank and attacked from the less
steeper side and also made it to the top.TOO EASY
DRILL SARGEANT. TOO EASY.
But nothing beats battling our tanks. And
this years first battle should be the biggest ever.
Steve's Cromwell should be ready, Will has refurbed
the Panther, and Mr. Amir might have a tethered T-34
ammo carrier ready. Add the Navarone gun, which fired
over 1,000 rounds, Marty's 88mm(formerly my 75mmPak40)
and it looks as though Mike is hinting at an armored
car judging by his last press release and we should
have the biggest event ever. So come to the battle and
experience the fun for yourself.
