Pop rivets shouldn't try to spread the wood at all, because the head
should stop expanding when it hits the surface and any hardwood should
be stronger than the aluminum rivet. But, if you insist on using wood
for the inner tread, you can always use a rivet washer to eliminate any
possibility of splitting the wood.
Of course, if you mold the inner tread, then there is no possibility of
splitting and no possibility of the guide horns breaking off.
