Metal Storm is an interesting trick, but it's not especially useful as a
practical weapon. Sure, it has a mind-bogglingly high rate of fire, but
it doesn't have a high _volume_ of fire, due to the limited ammo capacity
of a barrel. Carrying multiple barrels is not practical due to weight and
the fact that the weapon won't be sighted in properly.
For an emplaced weapon such as an anti-aircraft or anti-missile defense,
the solution I've seen for the ammo problem was multiple barrels mounted
in a single firing carriage. Unfortunately, once you've stacked enough
barrels together to have a reasonable amount of fire duration, you can get
similar ROF and still greater fire duration from traditional rotary
cannon.
