If you think that was ' ass-backwards' thinking then you don't want to know 
what I did !

I guessed a spacing for the treads [ turned out the teeth/bells were scale 
distance/number ! ] but didn't worry at all as I had no idea how long my 
tracks were going to be , as they were near scale I counted how many would 
be needed to cover the scarf joint and then stopped building tracks when 
near that limit.
I then put the tracks on the tank with the tensioning wheels in the correct 
place [ matched prototype ] I then marked the other end of the scarf joint 
and cut it , then I just divided up the rest of the gap and got in how ever 
many treads would fit!
