Title:
It all comes down the track system you are using. If you are using the TTS there is no need to have slippage in your tranny. If you are using attachment chain there is. I stripped a wheelchair motor gears when there was no Vbelt in the system.

I used #40 chain with 3/4" shafts because that's what I found surplus.

It sounds like you already have motors, if you don't I would recommend getting wheel chair motors. All in all its probably cheaper and faster development time. Anyone have experience with this?

So if you still want a dual stage 9:1 reduction I would recommend 5/8" shaft size. While, I'm sure that is overkill in terms of strength, that seems to be the most popular size to find bearings, sprockets and pulley's in. In my shopping experience I've found pulleys to be cheaper than sprockets and unfortunately chain to be cheaper than adjustable v-belts, so there is a trade-off.

I don't beleive in this whole slippage thing, (its built into my system just in case :) , but) I would like to hear from someone that has benefited from this. Wouldn't an appropriate sized fuse save the motors also. Fuse vs. slippage depends on how often the tracks lock up though . . .

Good luck
