I just finished a transmission for a set of EV Warriors, (disclaimer about taking my
advice: everything spins, but it otherwise untested).
It sounds like you already have motors, if you don't I would recommend getting wheel
chair motors. All in all its probably cheaper and faster development time. Anyone
have experience with this?
So if you still want a dual stage 9:1 reduction I would recommend 5/8" shaft size.
While, I'm sure that is overkill in terms of strength, that seems to be the most
popular size to find bearings, sprockets and pulley's in. In my shopping experience
I've found pulleys to be cheaper than sprockets and unfortunately chain to be
cheaper than adjustable v-belts, so there is a trade-off.
I don't beleive in this whole slippage thing, (its built into my system just in case
:) , but) I would like to hear from someone that has benefited from this. Wouldn't
an appropriate sized fuse save the motors also. Fuse vs. slippage depends on how
often the tracks lock up though . . .
Good luck
