I use a grinder to take the expanded head off the pin and then drive it
out with a hammer and nail, or sometimes a hammer and broken drill bit.

The diameter of the rounded base between of the teeth of a sprocket is
larger on #30 (roller) chain than on #35 (rollerless) chain. So a #30
won't fit on a #35 sprocket, and a #35 chain will be loose on a #30 sprocket.
See http://www.gizmology.net/sprockets.htm .

No. Well, yes. A series belts are 1/2" wide, while 4L series belts are
12.5mm wide. So, no.

Hardware store rule #1 (which also applies to car parts stores): NEVER
tell 'em what you're building.

Try this: take a 1/2" or so rope and tie it around the two pulleys,
fairly tightly. Then take it to the car parts store and say "Duh..." (this
is so they know you're speaking to them) "my car belt broke, I need another
one." They'll ask what kind of car, so can say "Duh ... I dunno" and give
them the rope. They'll match it with a belt which has a very good chance
of being right.
This is how I do it. I got a belt for my table saw that way.
