6 volt gel cell more commonly known as sealed lead acid or SLA batteries are very common.

NOTE: WE ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT WET CELL MOTORCYCLE BATTERIES WHICH CAN ALSO BE 6 VOLTS.

SLA batteries can be purchased from a variety of places including at batteriesplus.com (some 200 locations nationwide).  Unlike wet cell batteries SLA batteries can be mounted standing up or on their side and come in a variety of sizes and capacities.  Using 3 6 volt batteries would be an easy solution to your 18 volt need.

Good luck
Steve
