Yea, what Steve said. The spokes were heavily redundant, so a shell would
pass right through them, leaving only a few broken spokes and lots of
unbroken spokes to support the load. The same principle as the "cage
masts" used on US battleships before WW II.
Either that or the idea was to laugh the enemy to death. :)
