Thanks, we've had a lot of fun with HMN over the last
few years. I'm very lucky that my wife enjoys the
competition and even helps out in the pits, so that
makes it much easier to justify the time and money...
Yes - shipping, hotel, airfare, etc. are a big
overhead if you want to compete nationally (just like
any sport I guess). Commercial shipping runs around
$0.65 per pound each way; figure a minimum of 200
pounds by the time I carry spares and tools...
The robot scene has really changed recently though -
there are a lot more weight classes now; you can build
and compete with 1, 3, 12, or 30 pounders in addition
to the traditional 60, 120, 220, and 340 classes. And
no matter where you live, there are likely at least a
couple of events per year within driving distance.
Even if you don't compete you should try to check out
a competition - the tickets are usually very
reasonable and there is no substitute for seeing these
things in person!
