Have you considered using foam or wood core fiberglass? It may require a
bit more engineering, but you should be able to construct a hull that's just
or almost as strong as a wooden hull, but *much* lighter. Not to mention
cheap. Woven mat fiberglass only costs a few dollars a yard.
