For what it's worth , I have already bent a 5/8 keyed shaft axle. I will
never go bigger than that but just so you know "overkill is never
overkill"
Happy Building.

Subject: Typical axle size
Hello all...
I'd like some feedback on axle questions
I was thinking about 5/8" keyed stock because it was the smallest bore
size available on the 30 tooth sprocket for #35 chain. After looking at
rod stock at Home Depot last night, I concluded that 5/8" was overkill.
I am now considering a smaller diameter rod, such as 5/16", non-keyed
utilizing a bushing up to the smallest sprocket bore size. I'd
appreciate your feedback on using this size.
Also, your thoughts on gear/sprocket attachment using non-keyed rods
would be appreciated. Are adhesives, bushings, collars effective
alternate methods of axle attachment?
Thanks.
