Good morning all,
Many thanks for the welcome! Don't get too impressed with the title, it
just means that I am a second-tier PC hardware tech. That won't have a
lot of bearing on this hobby.

I will give you a little information about myself, and my interests,
though... I'm involved in r/c in a number of ways, doing some flying
and mostly--lately, anyway--running nitro and electric off-road buggies
and stadium trucks. I'm also a member and past president of the Houston
Area Live Steamers, the local live-steam train group. I have built a
number of stationary steam engines from castings, and have contributed
to the construction of a 1/8th scale steam locomotive. As is necessary
in that hobby, I have some acquaintance with machine tools, and have a
couple of lathes and mills in my garage shop, along with a MIG welder
and a full set of woodworking tools.

I have been interested in armored vehicles for a great many years, and
have thought in the past of building a tank, but it just never seemed to
happen. I was just browsing on Ebay in the r/c section, and came across
a Marui tank, so I did a Web search on "r/c tanks" and came up with the
rctankcombat.com site.

As for what I'm thinking about building.... Well, although my taste in
aircraft runs to WWII, my taste in armored combat vehicles is definitely
more up-to-date. I'm thinking that an M1A2 MBT or possibly a Bradley
would be interesting. In browsing the site, I've noticed that there's
little in the way of functioning suspension being built into the current
crop of AFVs. I was wondering why that is? Is it too complex? Or just
not necessary?

Also, I was thinking of a video camera built into the mantlet , and
bore-sighted with the main gun, for use as a targeting system...
Contrary to the spirit of the hobby? Or also just too complex?

Forgive a newcomer's questions!

Tom

Everyone in the US Southwest should give a big "Texas Welcome" to Tom
from Houston. If you're within lasso distance of him, please drop him a
line and help him get started.

Tom, with a title like "Technical Systems Specialist II", it sounds like
you'll be teaching us a thing or two before too long. Please note, the
Invasion of Texas has been postponed until late 2005, because the local
warlord in your area, the Vegas Alliance, has fallen behind on their
production schedule (something about working on the backyard??) That
gives you plenty of time to prepare your last stand near the Alamo ;-)

What vehicle are you thinking of building?

        Frank P.
