OK you 802.11 fans.

Check out this link http://www.capitolautomation.com/charon1.htm

This is a low cost serial to IP converter. What it does is it takes standard RS232
serial input from a PC or a microcontroller, converts it to IP and directs it to
another module on an Ethernet network and outputs to a serial stream again. In
addition to the serial interface this module also has 10 general purpose TTL I/O
pins for direct control functions. The implication here is that the PIC
microcontroller gurus on the list could develop control and receiver boards to
incorporate this serial/IP module. This technology could allow an almost unlimited
number of control functions (both digital and analog) per vehicle, and literally
hundreds of vehicles could be controlled over a single wireless network.

Assuming a broadband connection to the battle field and IP camera technology. It
could be a simple matter to develop a browser based control system for remote
operation.
