I would dig up an 8mm bit if you can.  5/16" will work with some filing.  The shaft 
comes with a spring pin installed to engage that slot your talking about.  I removed 
mine and drilled my pulleys straight through and tapped and installed two set screws 
180 degrees apart.  The set screws engage the hole left by the spring pin.  Works 
great.

If the holes in your pulleys are larger than 8mm.  You can fill them with epoxy 
putty and drill them out when the epoxy sets.  That+s what I had to do with mine.
