from what I've seen you may not need a shock absorber. Start with the spring
setup and determine whether or not you think you need shocks, You may
realize that having a track that plays against 7 other spring loaded bogey's
almost gives you a natural shock absorber. I have never seen my machine
bounce or rattle, I don't see need for shocks in the system.
Just what I've learned.

Thick of it this way:
The heavier the oil, the more it will resist motion.
A 4 pound car will generate X amount of force when landing after a jump.
A 200 pound tank will generate >X amount of force if it were to land in the
same situation.
The question is; are you tuning your shocks to absorb a landing after a
jump, or a smooth ride over reasonable terrain?
The springs, on the other hand, do the actual support work. You want a
spring soft enough to compress a bit under the weight of the vehicle at
rest, but strong enough they won't bottom out over the smallest bump.
If your spring is too heavy, you don't get much of a suspension, if it's too
light, your hull will likely drag over most obstacles it should otherwise
clear.
