Paul,

Im an airplane builder too..models and full size...I agree..building
light will increase engine performance, same as it does on planes. 
Ground Friction at track contact is the biggie..

I am using 3/8 ply with 1/4 hollowed out bulkheads to re-inforce.  My
track chain is heavy but my pads are very light weight..about 9 grams
each with 1000 lbs tinsel strength.

am experimenting with various controllers.
