Nothing beats sandpaper.

Fluids (resins, etc) will always, to some extent, pool in valleys and go 
thin on ridges.  Even the thickest ones.

The only thing that will dry with no heed to the wood grain is 
plaster/wood filler.. But once it's dry you have to sand that as well, 
and it's not a very impact/friction resistant substance compared to wood.
