How about a feedback loop? Use the increased air-pressure in the barrel
used to fire the paintball gun to blow-back down the ammo chute/hopper to
assist gravity in moving the ammo. All it would need is a tube tapped into
the side of the barrel, the tube is then fed back to the top of the
chute/hopper and fitted by some kind of cap that can be removed to reload
the chute.
Using a similar system with a constant feed of high-pressure air down the
barrel you have a basic fully automatic paintball gun! a Servo could
control the ammo feed to stop/start the flow of ammo. Only problem is how
do you monitor the ammo levels?
My 10 cents worth.

how about some kind of set up that uses a spring to push the balls down a
tube ? enough pressure to move the balls but not enough to bust them .
or a tray that has a dip in the middle so the paint balls just go to the
center from gravity .
