I used the old standard, Rustoleum. It's thick enough. Wile enamel is probably not as good as an epoxy it'll probably do. A trim roller is about 3" wide and the nap covers any wood grain with a 2nd coat and a bit of sanding in between. It would probably be even a better texture to replicate for those cheaply produced castings the Americans and Russians were good for rather than the finely welded plated of their German counter parts.
