On something the size of a 1/6 scale tank I would 'face' the plywood with
sheet tinfoil, - the stuff the wife uses as oven trays or under the top
elements to catch the boil overs from pots.  It can be bent, reamed out to
form bulges, and best of all punched from the reverse side to similate rivet
lines.  I use her stitch wheel from the sewing basket.

Glues well to plywood using CA glue and best of all 'looks and feels' like
metal.  It IS metal. Takes paint nicely too.
