Joe,
I'd consider at least skining the balsa with a layer of fiberglass.
This might give you an idea of what kind of armor you'd need.
I was goofing in the garage and shot a few balls at the door (20ga steel backed with foam) now it has nice little divits almost 0.1" deep. dohhh!!
