Just a thought.

What about making the air pressure that is pushing the balls highest for the 
high caliber guns (88mm, 76mm, 75mm} and lower for the 37mm & 20mm light 
tanks and armored-cars?  The lower pressure would allow for paintballs to hit 
but not break, like a real shell may deflect, unless they are with in a good 
range.  You could even go so far as to make the 75mm or 76mm guns (Real life 
caliber) be lower than the 88mm.  This would make the size of the paintball 
less of an issue, and you could use smaller paintballs to get more scale 
barrels.
